1 σύβακα
Meaning: συώδη; σύβας λάγνος, also name of a satyr (vase-inscr.); συβάλλας ὁ καταφερης πρὸς τὰ ἀφροδίσια; also ὑβάλλης καταφερής, λάγνος H.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: To Lat. subō, - āre `be in heat', of female animals (since Lucr.); unclear (cf. W.-Hofmann s.v.). Pisani Ist. Lomb. 73: 2, 25 f. supposes Mediterranean origin. The gloss συώδη seems to be folketymology. -- Compare σύ[μ]βρος κάπρος H. (after the rut?); but also συβριακόν τὸ πολυτελές, συβριάζειν σοβαρεύεται, τρυφᾳ̃ with συβριασμός ὁ ἐν εὑωχίᾳ θόρυβος (beside which also, with unclear glosses, σύβρα and συβροί) H., all somehow connected with Σύβαρις or influenced by it (and by ὕβρις?). On συβάλλας, ὑβάλλης cf. also βαλλίον (s. v.; Thierfelder by letter). -- DELG supposes diff. influences so that no conclusion can be drawn. The variation σ-\/ Ώ prob. points to a Pre-Greek word. (Of course, - ακ- is a Pre-Greek suffix.)Page in Frisk: 2,817Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σύβακα
